Is Choose the Right a Mormon Hymn? Origins Explained

Is Choose the Right Mormon?

Yes. “Choose the Right” is a hymn associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are sometimes called Mormons. The hymn’s title refers to choosing what is right, and its message reflects a familiar theme in Latter-day Saint teaching: making thoughtful choices guided by faith and conscience.

Joseph L. Townsend wrote the words, and Henry A. Tuckett composed the music. The hymn has been used in church services and other religious settings, where its memorable refrain reinforces its central message. It is also included in the Church’s hymn collection, which is why the song is commonly identified with the Latter-day Saint tradition.

The word “Mormon” is widely recognized, but the Church asks people to use its full name or “Latter-day Saint” when referring to the faith and its members. So, a precise answer is that “Choose the Right” is a Latter-day Saint hymn, also commonly described as a Mormon hymn.
